Gilels playing exhibits perfect balance, clear phrasing, and sublime expression. Nothing is overdone or showy. Gilels’ forthright, steel-trap rhythm and powerful finger articulation really make you sit up and take notice, together with treacherous leaps in the first movement and fugal finale that land smack in the center of the keys. It’s easy to lose yourself in the pianist’s intensity, concentration, and seriousness of purpose.

His technique is flawless as well. The finale of the Moonlight Sonata usually has one of two problems, the bass line is played far too loudly or the right hand arpeggios are smeared so much that they sound as if they are all grace notes. Gilels made public debut at the age of 12 in June 1929 with a well-received program of L.v. Beethoven, Scarlatti, Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. In 1930 he entered the Odessa Conservatory where he was coached by Berta Reingbald, whom Gilels credited as a formative influence.
