Gilels - Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 21 - Variations - Weber: Piano Sonata No. 2. Add To Wish List + $16.19 ($17.99) - This item
Emil Gilels in a pure Beethoven concert FROM 1980, the late phase of his artistic development. His musicianship is experienced in this late concert, performed five years before his death. An evening of the highest artistic intensity, a mature Beethoven interpretation.
Gilels playing exhibits perfect balance, clear phrasing, and sublime expression. Nothing is overdone or showy. Gilels’ forthright, steel-trap rhythm and powerful finger articulation really make you sit up and take notice, together with treacherous leaps in the first movement and fugal finale that land smack in the center of the keys. It’s easy to lose yourself in the pianist’s intensity, concentration, and seriousness of purpose.

His technique is flawless as well. The finale of the Moonlight Sonata usually has one of two problems, the bass line is played far too loudly or the right hand arpeggios are smeared so much that they sound as if they are all grace notes. They are not new to disc and were reviewed by Jonathan Woolf as part of a six disc all-Gilels all-Beethoven set in 2004. The conductor is Kurt Masur in his pre-NYPO days. The forthright recordings place the sound confidently in the foreground. Gilels and Masur play and shape their roles likewise.

Beethoven's magnificent Piano Concertos interpreted by Mr. Gilels, my favorite is #1, and the stellar maestro, George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra of the 1960s and 1970s. This is musicality at its finest.

Nothing is overdone or showy. Gilels' pianism is preternatural -- I don't think I heard a single wrong/missed note, and never, even in Beethoven's wildest moments, does Gilels lost his grip on the line. Selbst unter Beethoven-Spezialisten gibt es kaum einen, der alle Sonaten gut spielt.
Among the familiar works are Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata and C minor Variations, and Gilels delivers standout readings of both. His Waldstein is rapturously exciting in its fast outer movements and deeply introspective in its slow central movement (which is actually an extended introduction to the finale), while his playing of the C minor Variations is relentlessly dramatic and unrelievedly intense. When Emil Gilels died in 1985, he had completed recordings of most but not all of Beethoven's piano sonatas, released here in a nine-disc set. What's here is unimaginably good: superlative recordings of 27 of the 32 canonical sonatas, including the "Pathétique," "Moonlight," "Waldstein," "Appassionata," "Les Adieux," and the majestic "Hammerklavier," plus the two early "Electoral" Sonatas and the mighty Eroica Variations.

He played all of this music with great integrity and plenty of color. Melodiya's editors have selected well; there isn't a dud in the series, and some of the performances are truly magnificent.

Gilels made public debut at the age of 12 in June 1929 with a well-received program of L.v. Beethoven, Scarlatti, Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. In 1930 he entered the Odessa Conservatory where he was coached by Berta Reingbald, whom Gilels credited as a formative influence.
